

Edward was born on December 21, 1941 to Alice Ryan and Edward J. Courtney in Yonkers General Hospital. Ed spent his early school days in both Yonkers and the Riverdale section of the Bronx and graduated from Yonkers High School in 1960. Ed then went on to study at Westchester Community College and later got his undergraduate degree and Masters from Mercy College. He was a student and later on in life an adjunct professor at John J. College. Ed was a veteran of the United States Army having served for two years as a military police officer in New Mexico.
After being honorably discharged from the U.S. Army, he continued his life of public service first as a police officer in White Plains and eventually transferring to the Yonkers Police Department where he would work the remainder of his career in numerous divisions eventually retiring as a Lieutenant. He then went on to work in the private sector at Goldman Sachs in their security department, then returned to the City of Yonkers as the Deputy Commissioner of the DPW and completed his career after several years employed at the Empire City Casino writing their security policies and procedures.
In 1961, Ed met Veronica Tobin at a house party in Yonkers. Ed and Ronnie went on to have three daughters Kerry Ann Carey (Sean), Maura Courtney-McSpedon (Rich), and Sheila McClintock (Patrick). They have nine grandchildren Ryan, Kevin, Kaitlin, Owen, Molly, Jack, Claire, Dermot, and Maeve.
Ed was a political enthusiast, avid reader, and he loved golf, baseball and basketball. He loved summer vacations to LBI and day trips with Ronnie and friends to Manhattan but above all else he loved and cherished his family.Ed was a devout Catholic and was proud of both his service to his Country and his Irish Heritage.
Ed was predeceased by his parents Edward and Alice.
Services will be held at Whalen and Ball Funeral Home on March 12th from 4-8pm, and Mass at Sacred Heart in Yonkers on Wednesday, March 13th at 10am along with Christian burial at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital as Ed prayed to St. Jude everyday.
