Edward T. Dunn (YFD Ret.) was born in Yonkers to Kyran V. and Anna H. O’Hara Dunn. He married Alice McCrudden on Sept. 14, 1957 at the Monastery Church of the Sacred Heart, Yonkers.
He was a graduate of Saunders Trades and Technical School, Yonkers, and received an A.A.S. (Fire Science) from Westchester Community College and Bachelor of Science degrees from both Mercy College and SUNY Empire State College. He served in the US Navy from 1949-52, earning the Combat Action Ribbon in Korea. He was a Past Commander of American Legion Post 7 in Yonkers.
He followed his father into the Yonkers Fire Department in 1954 and served in every rank, retiring in 1992 as Fire Commissioner and Chief of Department. He was an Adjunct Professor of Fire Science at Westchester Community College, and was proud that many of his students became the leaders of area fire departments. He was a progressive voice in the fire service and brought many technological and service improvements to his organization. In 1987, as a Deputy Chief, he arrived first at a major structure fire and found a missing 3 year old girl, Sujey Betancourt, under a bed.
He was very active in both Christ the King and Sacred Heart parishes, singing in the choir, and serving as President of The Holy Name Society, President of The Home-School Association, and as a lector and Eucharistic Minister. In addition, he was a member of the Yonkers Male Glee Club, The Westchester County Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Glee Club, Father Solanus Casey Guild, and an avid fisherman and golfer. Edward is survived by his four children: Kyran (YFD Ret.) (Patty), Larry (YFD) (Arlene), Catherine Dunn-Brosnan (Edmond), and Eileen McNelis (Charles). Edward was predeceased by his wife, Alice, in 2016, his brother, James, and his sister, Arlene Kissane. He is survived by his sister, Effie Ann Tompkins, brother-in-law, Larry McCrudden, and sisters-in-law: Betty Dunn, Jane, Lynn, Pat, and Carol McCrudden. He is survived by his grandchildren: Kathleen Dunn Bizzarro (Rob), Brian (YFD) and Lauren Dunn, Samantha, Nicole, and Melissa Dunn, Alicia, Conor, and Timothy Brosnan, John, Daniel, and Thomas McNelis, and his great-grandchild, Jack Bizzarro. Wake will be held at Whalen and Ball Funeral Home, 168 Park Avenue, Yonkers NY on Sunday June 24, 2018 from 7-9 pm and Monday June 25 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral Mass will be Tuesday June 26 at 9:30am at the Monastery Church of the Sacred Heart, 110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers, NY. Interment at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Yonkers.
The family prefers that no flowers be sent. Instead, donations to Calvary Home Hospice of the Bronx or Sacred Heart Monastery are preferred.
