
Fr. Brian Coffey, MHM (Mill Hill Missionaries) of Hartsdale died on Sunday October 22, 2017 at his residence. He was 72 years old. He was born on March 1, 1945 to James and Mary (Counihan) in Killarney, Co. Kerry, Ireland where he was raised and educated. He studied at the college in Freshford, Co. Kilkenny, the University College Dublin and Milltown. He studied theology at St. Joseph College Mill Hill. He took his Perpetual Oath on May 1, 1971 and was ordained in St. John’s Church, Co. Kerry, Ireland on June 25, 1972. Fr. Brian took up his appointment in Yalisele, Diocese of Basankusu until 1979 and then worked for a few years in parish promotion and vocation ministry in the Irish Region. In 1992, he was appointed Administrator and Organising Secretary in Freshford House, Kilkenny. In 1999, he was appointed in North America. The following year he joined a chaplaincy team at the Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, an assignment which he found to be very rewarding. He enjoyed playing golf and spending time at the gym and on holidays, spending time in his native Kerry. He also happily served as chaplain to Kerrymen’s Association of New York. It was noted by the Superior General that wherever Fr. Brian served, it was always conscientiously and with imagination and with a smile. Fr. Brian is survived by a sister, Mary Liegey of Monroe, N.Y., two sisters in England and 2 brothers and 2 sisters in Ireland. Visiting hours will be at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home on Wednesday and Thursday 2-4 & 7-9pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Christ the King Church on Friday October 27th at 11am. Final disposition will take place in Ireland.
