

The Capuchin Franciscan friars of the Province of St. Mary mourn the death of their brother Father Robert Maher, O.F.M. Cap., who passed away on August 20, 2013 at the age of 66.
Fr. Robert, the son of George and Virginia Petterson-Maher, was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1947. He attended St. Mary Seminary, Garrison, NY from 1961-1965.
He entered the Capuchin Friars in 1965; professed perpetual vows in 1971 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1974. He attended St. Anthony College, Hudson, NH [1966-70]; Maryknoll School of Theology [1970-71 and 1973-74]; St. Joseph Seminary, Yonkers [1971-72] earning both an Masters in Divinity and a Masters in Theology.
Following his ordination, Fr. Robert ministered as a religious formator [1974-78] residing at Mary Immaculate Friary, Garrison, NY; St. Anthony Friary, Hudson, NH; and St. Lawrence Friary, Milton, MA.
Fr. Robert ministered as a Catholic Hospital Chaplain for the next 12 years serving at North Shore Hospital, Manhasset, NY [1978-81]; Norwich Hospital, Norwich, CT [1981-84]; and St. Joseph Hospital, Yonkers, NY [1984-90].
Called to missionary work, Fr. Robert joined the Star of the Sea Vice Province and ministered in the Marianas Islands serving as pastor of San Miguel Parish, Talofofo, Guam [1990-97]. He would later serve in Hawaii as parochial assistant at St. Elizabeth Parish, Aiea, HI [1997-2007]; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Waikane, HI [2008-09] and administrator of St. George Parish, Waimanalo, HI [2009-12].
Fr. Robert returned to the Province of St. Mary in 2012 and resided with the senior friary Community of St. Clare in Yonkers.
He was survived by two brothers George [Valerie] Maher of Holbrook, NY; Thomas [Joann] Maher of Atlantic Beach, NC and their children.
Viewing will be held at the Whalen & Ball Funeral Home, 168 Park Avenue, Yonkers, NY [914] 965-5488 on Friday, August 23, 2013 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. & 7:00-9:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, 110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers, NY on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in the Province of St. Mary friar’s cemetery.
