George A. Gomez, a native and lifelong resident of Yonkers, passed away on January 29, 2023. He was born in 1932 to the late George and Julia (Troy) Gomez and grew up in St. Joseph’s parish.
Mr. Gomez graduated from Gorton High School in 1950, after a memorable sports career. A gifted high scorer in basketball, he also held a 3-year football record for both county and city. His baseball skills attracted the interest of major league scouts which led to his signing a contract upon graduation to play first base with the farm team of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Mr. Gomez was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1954 after 3 years’ service in the United States and Germany.
He was a pressman for major New York newspapers his entire working life, employed by the World Telegram, the Journal of Commerce, The New York Times, The Daily News, and the New York Post, retiring in 2001. He was a life member of the International Printing Pressmen’s Union of North America.
George was a 50-year member of the Yonkers YMCA. He was also a charter member of the 140 Club in northwest Yonkers; a member of VFW Post #1666; and he enjoyed the devoted friendship over many years of fellow members of the Wildcats Club.
George Gomez is survived by his nieces and nephews: Caryn Fiscella, Kevin Fiscella, Glenn Fiscella, Paul Fiscella, Lynne Fiscella, Frank Fiscella, George Fiscella, Edward Fiscella, Anthony Fiscella and Tristana Fiscella. He was predeceased by his sisters, Mona Coogan of Yonkers and Florence Fiscella of Newport News, Virginia, and his brothers-in-law, Edward Coogan and Ben Fiscella. Survivors include his cousin, James Gomez of Yonkers, as well as other extended family and friends.
Mr. Gomez’s funeral mass will be celebrated at Christ the King Church on Friday, February 3, 2023, at 10:00 a.m.
