uncle, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 12, 2020, in Suffern, NY.
George was born on September 2, 1923 to Gabriel and Anna (Wolczyko) Moroch. He attended Yonkers public
schools, and was a talented commercial artist and portrait painter. For many years he was a fashion illustrator
for Rosenblatt and Kahn in NYC, then worked as a machine operator for Phelps Dodge in Yonkers. He retired
after 20+ years from the U.S. Post Office. He was a parishioner at St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in
Yonkers.
George proudly and valiantly served in the U.S. Army during World War II (1943-45), as a cannoneer and
gunner in the European Theater including Ardennes, Belgium (Battle of the Bulge); Central Europe; Normandy;
Northern France; England; Scotland; and Rhineland/Germany. His boyhood passion for and self-study of
aviation proved valuable as he also served as an instructor on how to identify enemy aircraft.
George witnessed the London bombings on his way to Southampton, England, before boarding a ship for
Europe. “I was in the Army almost 3 years, in the thick of battle in France, Belgium, Luxembourg,
Liechtenstein and Germany. We got shelled, machine gunned, bombed, and attacked at night, but were were
pretty lucky. Somebody was watching over us.”
“The concentration camp was so disgusting, I had to go out…bodies all over. Seventy years later, I can still
see it. The roads were crowded with people walking in the mud. I heard someone speak in Russian, so I
yelled back in Ukrainian. The gentleman shouts ‘Americanski, Americanski’, then jumps up onto the truck,
hugs me and kisses my hand. He was just released from the concentration camp. I will never forget that.”
George earned Five Battle Stars, and was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, and
Good Conduct Medal.
George is survived by his wife of 59 years, Elizabeth (Homa) of Yonkers; children Nadine Schneider (Alan) of
New City, NY, and Christopher Moroch (Mischella) of Monroe, NY; grandchildren Katelyn E. Reicher of
Hercules, CA, Robert G. Reicher of New City, NY, Allison R. Schneider of New City, NY and Mitchell S.
Schneider of Los Angeles, CA; sister, Helen Torre of South Salem, NY; and many cherished nieces and
nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, and brothers John, Peter and Nicholas, and sister Mary
(Fedonik). George will be missed for his infectious laugh, sense of humor and storytelling; his love of
Christmas (and his perfect Christmas tree); his sweet-tooth; and most of all, his love for his family.
Due to the pandemic, a memorial service with military honors will take place at a later date.
With tremendous gratitude we recognize the staff of The Willows at Ramapo for the outstanding love and care
George received in the last 3 months.
