(Einstein Campus) in the Bronx, NY.
Born on March 22, 1950, on Sedgwick Avenue in the
Bronx, NY. Greg devoted his life to his family, his career in public service, and the
Irish-American community he loved.
Greg graduated from Fordham University in May 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. During
his years at Fordham, he was a dedicated member of the university’s water polo team and
served as a Ram-Keeper, remaining fond of his connection to the university throughout his life.
In May 1979, Greg married his beloved wife, Margaret (Peggy) Flynn. Together, they settled in
Yonkers, New York, where they raised their three children, James, Christine, and Brian. His
family was at the center of his life and he treasured the years they shared together.
Greg devoted much of his professional life to serving the City of New York. Beginning in 1972,
he worked in the city's Health Department and the Mayor’s Office before joining the
Comptroller’s Office, where he served as an Associate Staff Analyst until his retirement in 2011.
His career reflected a longstanding commitment to public service and the work of city
government.
A proud Irish American, Greg was a longtime member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians
(AOH), Division I, in Yonkers, where he was active for more than 30 years. He also participated
in the Yonkers St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, contributing to a cherished local tradition. In
March 1996, he had the honor of serving as Aide to the Grand Marshal, a memorable moment
in his many years of involvement in the Irish-American community.
Greg’s love of sports, music and grilling were some of the many interests he enjoyed over the
years. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the New York Yankees, New York Giants, and New
York Rangers, and fond of country music and cookouts on his deck.
Greg is survived by his beloved wife, Margaret (Peggy) Hackett; his three children and their
partners, James Hackett and Renata Galdino, Christine Georg and her husband, Adam Georg,
and Brian Hackett and his wife, Laura Hackett; and his cherished grandchildren, Henry and Jack
Georg, who lovingly knew him as “Pa Pa.” He is also survived by his sister, Valerie Zenus, of
Woodstock, Georgia.
He was predeceased by his father, James Hackett; his mother, Ruth Hackett; and his brother,
Roger Hackett.
Greg will be forever missed by those whose lives he touched. He will be fondly remembered by
his family, friends, and all those who knew him through his years of service and community
involvement. Above all, he leaves behind a lasting legacy in the family he loved and the many
memories shared with those closest to him.
