Aunt Irene always seemed to be a big sister rather than an Aunt to me.
After moving from Yonkers to Bangor Maine in 1957, we didn’t see her as often,
but she and Grandma did make several visits to stay with us.
I’ll always remember her swimming with us at Sand Beach in Bar Harbor in 50 degree water and climbing apple trees in the fall to pick her own apples

Our family got to know Irene from The Andrus on Hudson Nursing Home - Our Aunt Helen has been a resident there- for the past 8 years-  Irene and Aunt Helen made an immediate connection- mainly because they both had similar backgrounds - in fact, Irene knew a lot of families from Hastings -on- Hudson - that Aunt Helen knew- They enjoyed sharing stories of their past /had a lot of good laughs. 
As our Aunt’s  dementia worsened over the years - Irene watched over her - at meal time -she cut up her food and made sure Aunt Helen got her coffee and dessert -  she loved sharing with us what went on that day - what Aunt Helen ate - what games they played - just gave us such comfort to know,  Aunt Helen wasn’t so alone there- she had a friend❤️
We will always be grateful for the kindness and  compassion Irene showed our Aunt -she was so genuine -such a good soul- May she Rest In Peace❤️

I have a lifetime of memories of Aunt Irene.  She has always been an integral part of my life. From my earliest memories, Aunt Irene was there.  I didn’t grow up in New York but many of the highlights of my youth were centered around visits from Aunt Irene and my Grandma.  Those visits continued as I grew and I had the blessing of sharing her with my own family. She was always up for an adventure and her contagious laugh brightened any occasion. 
The last few years have been a struggle for her. I am grateful for the years that we had and now trust that she is at rest. Aunt Irene will be dearly missed.

Irene Hudgston Is my Sister. She was born into the loving family of Will and Minnie Hudgston and brother, Douglas. They were a young immigrant family finding their way within the Scottish Community of Yonkers in the early 1920’s.  I came along shortly after Irene. I was followed by two more sisters, Jean and Joan, and a wee brother William that lived but a short time.

Irene and I were just a year apart. As Irene reached the age to go something  special the “rules” were often bent so that I could join in too. I’m sure there were times when Irene may have resented that but for the most part it made life and events better to always have each other. 

Looking back over the years I cherish all the things we did and the adventures we shared together.  Growing up we were assigned chores together.  As we entered our teens and young adulthood we branched out together. We even adjusted to an acute hearing loss together. 

In recent years we have been separated by a distance of physical miles but still remained close bonded by our sisterly love.

Now we find ourselves at the end of our life journey.  She got to go first but I say to my sister, “Don’t worry, Irene, I’ll be right behind you. And oh the joy we will share, together again.”
