James M. McGillicuddy

Born on March 10th, 1945, and raised in San Francisco, CA, James led a life full of dedication and service.He earned a bachelor's degree in Business Administration and an associate degree in Hotel and Restaurant Administration from City College in San Francisco, CA. James served in the US Navy on active duty from 1964 to 1966, a service that took him all over the world, and continued his service in the naval reserves from 1972 to 1989.

On July 25, 1970, James married Maureen Leavey, and they settled in Yonkers, NY. He worked for the New York City Transit Authority from 1972 to 1995, retiring as a supervisor. After his retirement, James served as a cook for the Westchester Jewish Community Services and the Franciscan Sisters of Peace.

James was also a dedicated CYO basketball coach and led the CYO basketball program at Sacred Heart in Yonkers from 1990 to 1994. Notably, he coached a 5th grade team to the 1970 Northern California CYO Championship. Above all, he cherished spending time with his family, enjoyed cooking for family and friends, and followed his favorite sports teams in New York and the Bay Area.

James is survived by his wife Maureen, his children John and Tim, his brother Dennis McGillicuddy, his cousin Dominick Conti, his sisters-in-law and their husbands, Nora and Steve Coco of Rochester, New York, Patty and Tim Sumner of Roaring Springs, Pennsylvania, and Carole Leavey of Pelham, NY. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Christine Coco, Brian and Caitlin Leavey, and Kerri Kelly, as well as his grand niece and nephew, Kaia and Joseph Leavey. He is predeceased by his brother John McGillicuddy and his brother-in-law Joseph G. Leavey of Pelham, NY.

Visiting hours for James will be held on Friday, August 16, 2024, from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will occur on Saturday, August 17, 2024, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at Sacred Heart Church, 110 Shonnard Pl, Yonkers. A committal service will follow from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 10 W Stevens Ave, Hawthorne, NY.
