Joan M. Combs

Joan was born on September 4, 1935 in Yonkers, New York. She spent all but the last twenty years living in Yonkers, and would tell anyone she met that she was from Yonkers, New York.

Joan attended schools in Yonkers and graduated from Commerce High School in 1953. She went to work for the Bricklayers Fringe Benefit Funds shortly after graduating from high school. She was a bookkeeper and accounts receivable supervisor for BAC Local Union No. 1 in New York City for 43 years, retiring in 2000.

In 2004, Joan stepped out of her comfort zone and moved to Louisville, Colorado to be close to her niece and niece's family. She spent the last 20 years attending her great niece’s life events and eventually great-great nephew and 2 nieces activities as well.

Joan was a lifelong Roman Catholic who grew up attending Mass at the Monastery Church of the Sacred Heart in Yonkers, New York. After she retired, she would attend daily Mass and continued to do so when she moved to Colorado. She was a member of Sacred Heart of Mary Church in Boulder before moving to a memory care facility in 2019.

Joan was predeceased by her beloved father and mother, Edward S. and Margaret Murphy Combs. She was also preceded in death by her beloved sisters, Anna Marie Traub (John), Helen Combs, Ruth A. Dockal (John), and nephew Edward L. Dockal.

She is survived by her brother, Fr. Gordon Combs, OFM, Cap; niece Barbara Falace (Joseph), and their three daughters Sarah Phillips (Eric), Erin Stangoni (Michael), and Amy O’Neill (Shane). Joan is also survived by nephew Thomas Traub. She is also survived by two great-great nieces and a great, great nephew.

Joan’s family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at Greenridge Place Memory Care in Westminster, Colorado; and the nurses and CNA’s at The Denver Hospice. Joan received exceptional care and compassion during her residency there.

A memorial mass for Joan will be held Tuesday, September 3, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Sacred Heart Monastery - Capuchin Franciscan Friars, 110 Shonnard Pl, Yonkers, NY 10703. Following the memorial mass will be an interment from 11:15 AM to 11:45 AM at St Joseph's Cemetery, 209 Truman Ave, Yonkers, NY 10703.
