A lifelong Yonkers resident, Joan was born on December 4, 1932 to Nelson and Victoria (née Sczerzenie) Corke. She was an extremely proud graduate of Holy Rosary School and Yonkers High School.
Joan married her beloved husband John Hanrahan (deceased) and with him raised their four children David, Deborah (dec.), John Jr., and Christopher, along with playing mother to countless other children on the block as one of the “Morningside Mothers.” She had an immense love of family as well as a passion for travel, history, education, and volunteer work.
Joan will be remembered for her heart, humor, laughter, friendship and strength. Ever community-minded, after a career at Gimbels and St. Christopher’s school, she was a proud contributor to the Westchester Public Private Partnership SMART literacy program, Untermyer Performing Arts Council, Westchester Jewish Council, Yonkers Historical Society, Sacred Heart Rosary Altar, and The Catholic Widows and Widowers of Yonkers.
She loved family as friends and friends as family and loved hosting for holidays. With all the uncertainties in life, one thing that was guaranteed was that Easter was at Joan’s every Spring.
She is survived by her children David and wife Patricia, John, and Christopher; sister Leslie; son-in-law Kevin; grandchildren Kate, John, Bryan, Emma; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and friends Peggy Lewis and Martha Guarino. She is predeceased by her husband John; daughter Deborah; nephews Bradley Jr.,Timmy, and Michael Shapiro and a niece, Kathleen Shapiro; and childhood friend Paula Foley.
Special gratitude from the family to Dr. Dominick Reda, Sonya Taylor, and Colleen Hickey for their exemplary care.
