

Joan was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Yonkers, New York and received her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science Degrees from the Lienhard School of Nursing at Pace University. Throughout her professional career, she maintained her certification in pediatric nursing (CPN) and spent over thirty years as a Professor of Pediatric Nursing at the Dorothea Hopfer School of Nursing at Mount Vernon Hospital. Joan educated thousands of future nurses, teaching them the importance of treating their youngest patients with gentleness, care, and compassion.
Joan was a loving and devoted daughter, sister, and aunt. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, and attending daily mass. She kept her family well-fed by hosting countless holiday dinners and loved spending time during her days in retirement dog-sitting for her nieces’ and nephew’s pets. Joan was also a philanthropist. She contributed to countless charities throughout her life, including the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the Guiding Eyes for the Blind, and many others which help children, animals, and those in need.
Joan is survived by her sister Jacqueline Hogan; her nephew and his wife, Daniel and Amanda Hogan; her twin nieces Jessica and Jennifer Hogan; and many other relatives, including an aunt, and several cousins. Joan is predeceased by her parents; her twin brothers, John and Joseph; and her brother-in-law, William Hogan. She was greatly loved and will be dearly missed by all.
Visitation will be at the Whalen and Ball Funeral Home on Friday, February 5 from 4-6pm. A funeral mass will be held at Sacred Heart Church on Saturday February 6,at 9:30am with private burial.
