Born on April 20, 1961 to Joan V. née Corke and John J. Hanrahan, Sr., he was a beloved son, brother, uncle, nephew, grandson, cousin and friend. He was a lifelong resident of Yonkers and graduate from Sacred Heart grade school and high school. John was also known by friends as Hank or Hammer. Beginning in high school, John started work at Liberty Lines as a bus washer at the age of 16. Ever the creature of habit, he retired after 43 years as a bus mechanic with the company.
John was a dedicated family-man and devoted and proud uncle to his nieces and nephews. He had nothing but a full heart for his family and friends and would do anything for them at the drop of a hat. Proud member of the Ant Hill Mob of Lake Avenue, John formed many life-long friendships and left a large impact on anyone who met him be it at work, around the neighborhood, or the local watering hole. He also enjoyed his summer vacations with friends at the Jersey Shore and holidays with family. A proud Irishman, John was a grandstand monitor at the New York City St. Patrick's Day parade and often found on McClean Avenue on the weekends. In retirement, anyone who knew him knew that John could often be found with his mother anywhere from the grocery store to sharing a hot dog at Nathan's or dinner promptly at six o'clock. John enjoyed co-hosting holiday parties with his brother Chris, collecting toy donations for Elizabeth Seton Children's Center in memory of his mother. John will be remembered for his boisterous personality, his wit, sense of humor, and for being the "tough guy" while having a heart of gold.
John is predeceased by his parents Joan and John Hanrahan; sister Deborah Condon, née Foley; grandmother Victoria E. "Nanny" Corke; uncle Bradley Lewis; aunt Paula Shapiro; and "brother" Louie Navedo. He is survived by his brother David and sister-in-law Patricia; brother Christopher; aunts Leslie and Peggy; nieces and nephews Katherine, John, Bryan, and Emma; brother-in-law Kevin Condon; "brother" Donald McMaster; and a host of cousins and extended family members who will miss John greatly.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff of St. John's Riverside Hospital, particularly the ICU unit, Dr. Rajendra Rampersaud, and Morgan Murphy, RN. We would also like to thank family and friends who have been so supportive over this time. In lieu of flowers and mass cards, the family is requesting donations be made to Elizabeth Seton Children's Center, St. Jude's Children Hospital, or Rosary Hill Home.
