A loving husband, father and grandfather peacefully passed away on March 20, 2021. John was born July 4, 1924 in Bonarivka, Ukraine to Micheal and Eva. He was the youngest brother to Justina, Marta and Andrij. When the Bolsheviks invaded his town, he fled at the young age of 16. He lived in Germany, Austria, Belgium and France working as a coal miner and bricklayer. Through the sponsorship of his aunt and uncle, John came to the United States and settled in Yonkers, NY. where he met his beloved Millie Sereda. They married on June 3, 1956 and raised their two children Marianne and Diane. He worked for the Sugar Refinery as head machinist for 30 years and enjoyed retirement for 35 more. Entertaining and having friends over to play cards and vacationing with the St Michael’s Golden Agers brought him joy. He was the proudest of grandfathers. For many years, he humbly ushered at St. Michael’s Church at Saturday evening Mass. He greeted everyone with his genuine smile! John was preceded in death by his father, Michael, his mother, Eva, his sisters, Justina and Marta, his brother, Andrij and his wife of 53 years, Mildred. He is survived by his daughter Marianne Teniuch and son-in-law Peter, his daughter Diane and grandchildren, Adrian and Alexandra.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 25, 2021 at St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church on Shonnard Pl. In lieu of flowers, a donation in his name can be made to St. Michael’s Church.
