

Joseph Szczur, a longtime Yonkers resident, died on Monday November 7, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born to Semen and Karolina Szczur in Drohobych, Ukraine where he was raised and educated. Mr. Szczur was a self-employed building contractor in Westchester County for many years until his retirement in 1993. He was a parishioner of St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, a longtime member of the Ukrainian American Youth Association (CYM), a member of CYM’s Board of Directors and a past president of CYM in Yonkers. He was also on the board of directors and served as the secretary of the board for the Suma Federal Credit Union for over twenty years. He enjoyed gardening. “He had a strong faith in God and he lived for his family.” On September 29, 1957, he married his loving wife, Anna Basalyga in St. Michael’s Church. Mrs. Szczur survives and lives in Yonkers. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Yaroslawa Perich and her husband Myron of Yonkers, Luba Dzwonczyk and her husband Darek of Yonkers, and Daria McDonough and her husband Brian of Greenwich, CT., one brother, Roman Szczur and one sister, Maria Brenych, both in Ukraine. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Alexandra (Adrian), Mykola, Lida, Andriko, Isabella, Peter and Olivia, one great granddaughter, Nina and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Myron and Ivan Szczur. Visiting hours will be at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home on Friday 2-4 & 7-9pm. Pannakhyda Service Friday 7:30pm. Funeral Service will be held in St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church on Saturday November 12th at 9:30am. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church needs.
