

Josephine was born on June 3, 1947 in Przemysl, Poland and immigrated to the United States with her family in 1960. She graduated from Bronx Community College as a Registered Nurse in 1968. Josephine began her career as a nurse at New York University Medical Center, leaving in 1970 to begin work at St. John’s Riverside Hospital in Yonkers, where she remained for nearly 40 years. She served as a nurse on many floors through her years, but her love was pediatrics. Josephine loved reading and spending time with her family and friends. She spent long hours knitting, crocheting, sewing things for those she loved. Josephine was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, aunt, sister, nurse and friend, offering love, care and compassion to all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband, Michael Swist; her daughter, Elizabeth, Southington, CT; her daughter Jennifer (Rodger), Simsbury, CT; her grandsons, Nathan and Daniel; and her brother Walter (Barbara), Vineland, NJ.
She was preceded in death by her father, John; her mother, Anna; her brother Stanley; and her sister Rose.
The family wishes to thank all the staff at St. John’s Riverside Hospital for everything they did for mom. Special thanks to the staff of the oncology floor, for their tireless care and loving support. The family also wishes to especially thank Dr. Norman Rosen, his wife Susan, Dr. Smitha Mellacheruvu, and nurse Diane McDonald, who served as mom’s partners in battle and extended family during her long illness.
