The life of Joyce Strauss was lost too soon on Tuesday, July 17, 2018. She was born on January 15, 1956 in Yonkers to Michael and Mary. Joyce attended the Yonkers Public Schools. At about 4 years old, Joyce began her nursing career by taking care of stray, hungry cats and birds with injured wings. Joyce received her nursing degree from the Cochran School of Nursing in 1976, and completed her internship at Saint John’s Hospital. She became a nurse in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and later became the Director of the ICU and Telemetry Units for many years. Joyce educated her staff to be top-notch, and worked the last 5 years in Staff Development. In her time of need, her staff and the doctors paid tribute to their educator by providing her with incredible care and comfort.
Joyce influenced the lives of many people - her family, friends, staff and the physicians who worked with her. Joyce was a hard worker and expected her staff and family to be the same. She was a strong woman and a tough nurse. If you wanted sympathy from Joyce, something better be broken or someone better be bleeding. There wasn’t much she wouldn’t try to do. She took a car mechanics course with her good friend, cut down trees, completed do-it-yourself house repairs and hosted the best Thanksgiving dinners.
Joyce was very proud of her son. She loved to watch his hockey games, and was happy to travel anywhere (near and far) to watch them. Joyce loved the times in Rhode Island that she shared with her family, and the Lake George house that she and Tre built together. She enjoyed gardening and flowers. She had a strong love for animals and cared for her pets - particularly Silver, Jessie, Star, and Frankie. Joyce loved any opportunity to shop, especially for Christmas gifts. She drove fast, had a quick wit, a great sense of humor and the most loving heart. Her joy was in her son, daughter-in-law, and grandson. She is also survived by her brother and his wife, her sister and her husband, and many other family members.
Joyce loved and lived with all her heart, and we will miss her with all of ours.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the Yonkers Animal Shelter.
