Obituary of Kathi K. Kirkpatrick
Kathi was brave; she came to New York on her own at age 18. She was a caring and supportive friend. Fun loving. Deliberately mismatched socks. Beautifully painted fingernails, often with a holiday theme. Green for St. Patrick’s Day. Dramatic dress. Flowing, accented with wonderful scarves, sometimes a little lace, always a hat. A poet. Kathi worked at a Montefiore cancer center. Her sense of humor helped to put the patients at ease and lightened the mood. Her laugh was contagious. Above all, an Artist. She was drawing from a young age. Drawing and writing became her refuge. She enjoyed meeting a friend at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to draw from the sculptures and other art there. An avid student of anatomy, for many years Kathi faithfully attended the Saturday morning figure drawing class at Spring Studio, (a/k/a Minerva’s Drawing Studio). She loved Minerva’s lectures on anatomy, and was thrilled when Minerva loaned her various bones to take home to draw for inclusion in her compositions. She enjoyed painting on unusual surfaces. She acquired a large supply of old NYC subway maps, full size. These became the ground for several portraits. She loved flowers. Roses, calla lilies, sunflowers, orchids, tulips, amaryllis. Added them to many paintings. Kathi also enjoyed classes by Dan Gheno. She was looking forward to working with him again this summer at The Art Students League. Kathi posted much of her work on, under “”. She commented there on each piece. Where available, we’ve included those comments, in quotes, with her drawings and paintings shown here. A memorial visitation for Kathi will be held Thursday, May 26, 2022 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at for the Kirkpatrick family.
