

Girsch, Lawrence J. passed away on Monday, January 9, 2017 at St. John’s Riverside Hospital surrounded by his family. “Larry” was born in Yonkers to Agnes Bielecki and Anthony Girsch, Sr. on April 17, 1924. He was a World War II Veteran serving in the Army Air Force as a Sergeant Aviation Gunner from 1943-1946. On November 28, 1959 he married Jean M. McElmeel at St. Mary’s Church in Yonkers. He served in the Yonkers Fire Department for over 25 years, retiring in 1985 as a Lieutenant. In 1978, he received a Unit Citation from the City of Yonkers for bravery in the battling of a general alarm fire the previous year. After retiring, he loved to stay in touch with all his co-workers and was very active in the Police/Fire Retirement Association. He was a member in the Holy Name Society at St. Bartholemew’s Church in Yonkers. In his younger years, he studied art in New York City and was a very accomplished artist. He was also an avid golfer. His devotion and love of family was known and felt by everyone and anyone who ever met him. He is survived by his daughter, AnnMarie Bybel Drobnak(Stephen) of Fishkill, and his step-daughter, Gail Conklin of Riverdale. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Michelle and Michael Conticchio of Mt Vernon; Jennifer and Edwin Lown III of Hopewell Jct; Michael and Kathleen Bybel of Clarksville, TN; Jacqueline Conklin of Manhattan; and Steven and Nicole Bybel of Verbank. He is also survived by his great grandchildren: Maura, Gavin, and Audrey Conticchio; Edwin and Gregory Lown; and Christopher Bybel. He is survived by three siblings: Josephine Lehoytak, Edward and Anthony Girsch. He is additionally survived by numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins. He was predeceased by his mother and father, wife Jean, brothers John, Frank, and William , sister Elizabeth Romano and a step son in law, Michael Conklin. Calling hours will be at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home on Thursday, January 12, from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, January 13th at 10 am in St. Bartholomew’s Church. Internment will follow at St. Joseph cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Yonkers Fire Department Widow and Childen’s Foundation or the Hank Longo Burn Center.
