Mari Elizabeth (Schultz) Donohue was born in Yonkers, NY on October 15,1950 to Marie Kelley and Alfred Schultz. She attended Our Lady of the Rosary elementary school and then moved to Shenorock, NY where she graduated from Kennedy High School in 1968. After a year at Good Counsel College in White Plains, she returned to Yonkers, received her RN from Cochran School of Nursing, and worked at St Johns Riverside Hospital. She married Michael Donohue in 1972 and had three children. Mari spent her children’s early years at home caring for them and was a fixture at their schools and in the community.
Mari went back to school and was proud to receive her baccalaureate degree from the College of New Rochelle in 1991. She returned to St John's, where she worked in many different roles: she provided hands on patient care in the ambulatory surgery unit, telemetry, and ICU, and retired in 2016 as a Case Manager. During her tenure at St John’s, she also worked for Visiting Nurse Services of Westchester and Calvary Nursing Home. Mari was fiercely dedicated to the care and comfort of her patients and their families. She was an excellent and compassionate nurse and loved to sing to her patients in a way that brought smiles and comfort.
An avid traveler, Mari enjoyed many trips with “the fab four” exploring the world. She was a fixture at Broadway shows, concerts, and community theater. She loved to laugh and sing—anyone who met her can attest to that. But her greatest joy was found with her children and grandchildren, especially Isabella Donohue who named her Mops. They shared many things, particularly laughter, love of music, theater, and dance. Mops was Isabella’s biggest fan and always an enthusiastic, loud, and proud audience member! She was so proud of all her grandchildren and expressed her love by making beautiful afghans for them and other family members and friends. She had periods when her hands were never idle, always working a crochet hook and making something beautiful.
Mari died on May 8, 2020 after a valiant fight against covid-19. She is survived by her children, Mark Donohue, Mari Elizabeth Donohue, and Desiree Patno (Tim), her granddaughters Isabella Donohue and Courtney-Grace Neizer, and grandsons Travis, Brandon, Trey, Alex, Andrew, Shea and Cole Patno. Her son Michael predeceased her in 2009. Also surviving are sisters Paula Schultz Peden (Matt), Anne Schultz Browne (Jim), and Christina Deslandes (Phil); nieces Laura Leites (Alex), Jean Christodoulou (Paul), and Katie Browne; nephews Andrew Deslandes (Marlana), Steven Deslandes, and Peter Browne; 5 great-nieces and nephews; Theo; Lena; an amazing group of close friends; and too many cousins to count.
We will all miss her rollicking sense of humor, her delight in the absurd, her songs for every occasion, and the integrity, dedication and compassion that she brought to her life and her profession. Mari was honored at a candlelight vigil held in Untermyer Park by the NY State Nurses Association for her untiring work as a nurse until the end.
We were so blessed to have her. She will live forever in our hearts. Rest in Peace.
