Maria T. Carreira

January 9, 2021, at age 54.

Born February 28, 1967, to Antonio and Natalia Ribeiro in Chipar de Cima, Anadia,

Portugal. She graduated from Elizabeth Seton College in 1987 with an Associate of Science

degree and became a Registered Nurse through Iona College in 1994. Maria met the love of her

life, Mario, during their time together at Yonkers High School. Married on June 23, 1990, they

went on to have two children: Jeffrey and Emily. Maria was a respected nurse at St. John’s Hospital for 36 years, where she went to great lengths to deliver the highest degree of care to every patient who crossed her path. She demonstrated a remarkable level of compassion and empathy, which she utilized to help the people in her community who were in need. Maria is remembered by those who worked with her for her thoroughness and the pride she took in her work as she set a glowing example for what it

means to be a nurse. Maria’s caring nature towards others translated far beyond the workplace. Her warmth and love were felt by all those lucky enough to have her in their life. As a selfless wife and

mother, she always put her family first and built a beautiful life for her husband and children.

Maria’s entire family attests to her affectionate nature as she truly loved for everyone to gather

for holidays and celebrations. Maria is survived by her husband, Mario, her son, Jeffrey, a Yonkers police officer, and her daughter, Emily, a biology student at Fordham University. She also leaves behind her parents, Antonio and Natalia, her brothers, Fernando and Jose, her sisters, Fatima and Adelaide, and

many nieces and nephews. Her spirit lives on through the countless people that she touched, and she will be forever remembered for her beautiful smile and the kindness she showed others.

A visitation for Maria will be held Thursday, January 13, 2022, from 12:00 PM to 7:00

PM at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home, 168 Park Ave, Yonkers, NY 10703. A mass of Christian

burial will occur Friday, January 14, 2022, from 9:30 AM to 10:15 AM at Sacred Heart Church,

110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers, NY 10703. A committal service will occur Friday, January 14,

2022, from 11:15 AM to 11:30 AM at Ferncliff Cemetery, Secor Road, Greenburgh, NY.
