
Mario J. Vittoria of Shrub Oak (formerly of Yonkers, NY) passed away on Wednesday February 22, 2012 at the age of 88. He was born in Palena, Italy on January 27, 1924 to the late Guiseppe and Maria (DelBene). Mario is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years Angelina (Apicella) his loving children Joseph (Karen) and Patricia (Tony) Capozza and grandson’s Charles Anthony and Joseph Mario Capozza and Joseph Mario Vittoria. Brother of Irma Tolli, Ida DiBenedetto the late Mary and Anthony Vittoria and uncle to many nieces and nephews. Mario moved to Yonkers, NY with his family when he was just 15 months old. He enlisted in the Navy at 17 and served for 5 years in the Pacific theatre during WWII. One of his most treasured memories was of entering Pearl Harbor onboard the Battleship USS North Carolina shortly after the December 7th attack to the cheers of all who were stationed there. On his return home he became employed by General Motors where he worked for 41 years before retiring in 1986. Mario was an avid fisherman and enjoyed teaching all the children in his family how to fish, clam and crab. His culinary skill of making the best meatballs around became known to all of his family and their friends. He was a former member of the Palenese Association on Park Hill. He looked forward to visits to area casino’s to play the slots, but the biggest joys of his later life was of his 3 grandsons who were the apple of his eye. His sense of humor and happy go lucky ways are going to be missed by all. May he rest in peace. Visiting hours will be on Friday from 2-4 & 7-9pm in the Whalen & Ball Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Shrub Oak at 11:15am. Interment will follow at Rose Hills Cemetery.
