
Mary Gomez, 101 years old and a lifelong Yonkers resident, passed away peacefully at Andrus Nursing Home in Hastings on Hudson, N.Y. on Friday September 23, 2016. She immigrated to the United States from Rudlov, Czechoslovakia as a child and graduated from local public schools. Being an accomplished seamstress, she was employed by several tailors doing clothing alterations. For ten years she was a dedicated daily volunteer at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home in Yonkers, N.Y. Mary enjoyed cooking and baking, hosting family and friends and volunteering with events at the nursing home. She was honored to receive the volunteer of the year award numerous times. She married Ignatius Gomez at St. Nicholas of Myra Church on Ash St. in Yonkers, N.Y. on September 10, 1939. He predeceased her on January 1, 1996. She is survived by her two children, Robert (Ann) of Yonkers, N.Y. and Mary Ann Kulacz (John) of Mount Vernon, N.Y. Also, grandmother of Melanie Gomez-Pizzurro, Jill Marie Kulacz and John Kulacz III. In addition, great grandmother of Dominic John Pizzurro-Gomez and Ava Marina Pizzurro-Gomez. She was predeceased by three brothers, John, George, Edward, and sister Helen Frattura.
The Westchester County Board of Legislators proclaimed Wednesday, May 13th, 2015 “Mary Gomez Day” in Westchester County. Visiting hours will be at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home on Tuesday 4-8pm. Funeral service will be held in St. Nicholas of Myra Church, White Plains on Wednesday September 28th at 10am. Interment will follow at Oakland Cemetery.
