

Dr. Maurice R. Barbezat, a longtime Yonkers resident, died on Friday February 24, 2017 at Cabrini of Westchester in Dobbs Ferry. He was 92 years old. He was born on February 14, 1925 to Fritz and Helene Barbezat in Neuchatel, Switzerland where he was raised and educated. He was a graduate of the University of Geneva in Switzerland where he also began his medical school training. He continued his medical school training in Paris and completed his training in Montreal, Canada at the Institute of Cardiology. He did his residency at the Albert Einstein-Montefiore Medical Center. He was affiliated with the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine and the University of Geneva Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Barbezat had his own cardiology practice for over 50 years until his retirement in 2008. He was also a cardiologist on the staff of Yonkers General Hospital and St. John’s Riverside Hospital. He held the position of the Head of the Cardiology Department at St. John’s Hospital for several years, a position from which he resigned in 1988. Dr. Barbezat was a member of the RX Club and the Amackassin Club. He enjoyed playing cards and pool with his colleagues and also enjoyed playing tennis. On June 12, 1954, he married his loving wife, Anna DiPaolo in Yonkers, a marriage which lasted 51 years. Mrs. Barbezat died on December 18, 2005. Survivors include a son, John Barbezat and his wife Trisha of Yonkers, a daughter, Debra Barbezat and her husband James Hughes of Waterville, Maine and five grandchildren, Conor, John, Brittany, Olivia and Chloe. He is also survived by a brother in law, Michael DiPaolo , a sister in law, Marie DiPaolo and two nieces, Michelle and Amanda. He was predeceased by three brothers, Pierre, Andre and George Barbezat. Visiting hours will be at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home on Monday 4-8pm. A final viewing and short prayer service will take place on Tuesday February 28th at 9:30am with a graveside service to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery at 10:30am.
