Nancy J. Varian

Born May 20, 1935 in White Plains, NY, to native Italians Annibale Matera and Lucy (Longo) Matera, Nancy was one of six children. In 1955, she married Raymond C. Varian, a lifelong Yonkers resident and a truck mechanic for the Cheerful Card Company. During their 45-year marriage, they raised 4 children in Yonkers, while Nancy worked as a switchboard operator first at AT&T and then at Yonkers Raceway. A dedicated and hard-working employee, she often took three buses to get to work. Across her nearly 50-year career in telecommunications, she established close bonds with her co-workers, with whom she met monthly for lunch during her retirement. With meticulous attention to her hair and makeup, she enjoyed going to the beauty parlor regularly, matching her purses to her outfits, and artfully applying her makeup. She was a devoted nightly news watcher and a fan of the New York Yankees. As a lifelong member of Christ the King Church in Yonkers, she always sat in the front row and rarely missed a weekly mass. She is survived and deeply missed by her 4 children, Raymond Varian, Deborah Bermudez, Nancy Chillemi, and Phyllis Varian; 12 grandchildren, Tiffany, Tiara, Ramon, Raymond, Christopher, Shannon, Brian, Jennifer, Allison, Michelle, Stacie, and Annemarie; 8 great grandchildren, Emma, Ean, Axl, Logan, Ethan, Jacob, Emmanuel, and Jonathan; and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband; granddaughter, Tyrina Varian; and five siblings, Anne Ciaramella, Katherine Bresmon, Joseph Matera, Carmine Matera, and Gerald Matera.

Visiting hours will be at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home, 168 Park Avenue, Yonkers, NY 10703 on Monday, June 15, 2026 3-7 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Christ the King Church, 740 North Broadway, Yonkers, NY 10701 on Tuesday, June 16, 2026 10:30 am. A private Committal Service will follow.
