After a long illness, Pamela Rey Martin died on Sunday, June 1, 2014 at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx. A Yonkers native, Pamela was born in 1949 and graduated from Gorton High School in 1967. A love of cold weather drew Pamela to New England, where she attended Springfield College and received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1971. Pamela then taught Physical Education in Fall River, Massachusetts. After teaching in Massachusetts, Pamela traveled throughout Europe and moved to Spain, where she met her husband, Francisco Martin, and worked for the YMCA. After living in Spain for five years, Pamela and Francisco returned to New York with their daughter, Nancy.
Pamela was a Marketing Coordinator at Alpine Funds, LLC. Bicycling, traveling, boating, the arts and local, organic cuisine were just a few of Pamela's interests and hobbies. Pamela was also an avid member of the Altar Guild at Our Lady of Pompeii Church in Dobbs Ferry, and she very much enjoyed designing the church's flower arrangements. In addition, Pamela supported the The American Cancer Society, St. Joseph's Indian School, WNYC Radio, The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Archdiocese of New York, the Brain Behavior and Research Foundation, Carnegie Hall, Habitat for Humanity, The Metropolitan Opera Guild, The Nature Conservancy, The Southern Poverty Law Center, and St. Jude's Children's Research. A donation in her memory may be made to any of these organizations.
A memorial mass in Pamela's honor will be held on Friday, June 6th, at 10:00am at Our Lady of Pompeii Church in a Dobbs Ferry. A memorial visitation service will be held at Whalen and Ball funeral home in Yonkers, also on Friday, June 6th, from 5:00pm until 7:00pm.
