

Rita Jewell (nee Condon) a lifelong Yonkers resident died peacefully surrounded by her family on October 9, 2013 at age 90. She was born on June 4, 1923 to Richard and Agnes Sullivan Condon in Yonkers where she was raised and attended St. Peter's Grade School and graduated from Sacred Heart High School. Rita was an Assistant Administrator for Hudson View Nursing Home for 40 years retiring at age 80. She married Sargent J. Jewell on July 21, 1945 in St. Peters Church and raised eight children until his death in 1969. She was a member of the Yonkers Republican Party and a secretary for the Yonkers Republican City Committee. She was the first woman inducted into the Yonkers Kiwanis Club. She was a longtime parishioner of Sacred Heart Church, was active in the Mother's Guild and was on the board of the Parish Council. She enjoyed traveling (a world traveler) and especially enjoyed the gathering of family and friends on Sundays and holidays where all were welcome in her home on Fairview Street. She was lovingly cared for by her aide Florence Boateng for the last three years. Rita is survived by her 8 children Kathleen Slanzi, Mary Ellen Whelan, Richard (Natalie) Jewell, Elizabeth (James W.) Curtis, Patricia (Joseph) Yasinski, Veronica (Stan) Stolarski, Virginia (Fred) Scialabba and Anthony (Christine) Jewell, a brother Br. Augustine Condon, S.S.P. and two sisters Anita Mooney and Jean Gebert. She is also survived by 23 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sister Gladys Clark, a brother John Condon and a son in law, Frank Slanzi. Visiting hours will be in the Whalen & Ball Funeral Home on Friday (today) from 2-4 & 7-9pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday October 12th in Sacred Heart Church at 10am. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.
