

Salvatore Mazzara, a longtime Yonkers resident, died on Tuesday March 14, 2017 at Calvary Hospital. He was 93 years old. He was born on May 23, 1923 to Ignazio and Josephine Mazzara in New York City where he was raised and educated. He attended grade school in Manhattan and high school in Staten Island. Mr. Mazzara was a longshoreman with the International Longshoreman’s Association Local 920 for forty five years until his retirement in 1992. He served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1946 as a Technician 5th Grade and was stationed in Africa and Europe. After the war, he was an interpreter in Paris for both French and Italian. He was a longtime parishioner of Sacred Heart Church and was an avid golfer and an avid sports fan. His first wife Margaret died in November 1979. On October 22, 1983, he married his second wife, Miriam Landy Burke in Sacred Heart Church. Mrs. Mazzara survives and lives in Yonkers. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Ignatius “Larry” Mazzara and his wife, Jean of Florida and Nicholas Mazzara and his wife, Pat and four step daughters, Miriam (Kevin Hengel) Burke, Debra (George) Muench , Janice (Richard) Sabol and Colleen Burke. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, Mark (Sandy) Mazzara, Theresa Mazzara, Thomas Sabol, Erica Sabol, Patti Muench Opalenski, and James, George and Steven Muench and two great grandchildren, Victoria and Isabella. Visiting hours will be at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home on Sunday 2-6pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Sacred Heart Church on Monday March 20th at 9:30am. Interment will follow at St. John’s Cemetery, Middle Village, N.Y.
