
Sr. Laurenza Hickey, F.S.P. died on Tuesday March 22, 2011 at age 103. She was born on May 15, 1907 to William and Lucy (Moran) Hickey in New York City. She graduated from Assisium Business Institute in N.Y.C. and Ladycliff College in Highland Falls, N.Y. where she received a BA in Education. She also received an MS in Guidance and Educational Psychology from Fordham University. She entered the Franciscan Sisters on September 8, 1924, professed her first vows on August 28, 1926 and made her profession of final vows on July 2, 1932. Sr. Laurenza taught and served as principal at elementary schools and secondary schools for about forty years in the New York Archdiocese which included Queen of Martyrs and St. Veronica’s in NYC, St. Joseph’s High School, Waverly Place, St. Theresa’s in Tarrytown, Ladycliff Academy in Mohegan Lake, Ladycliff College in Highland Falls, Assisium Business School in NYC and Sacred Heart High School where she worked as a secretary in the guidance office from 1988 to 1998. Sr. Laurenza served as the Assistant Provincial for the Franciscan Sisters for six years, as the congregation Archivist from 1981 to 2001 and was the recipient of the Peacemaker Award from the Franciscan Federation in 2005. She will be remembered as an excellent teacher and principal by her students, many of whom still kept in touch with her. She is survived by a niece, Joan Nachtman of Hauppauge, N.Y. and several grand nieces and grand nephews. Visiting hours will be at Marion Woods Convent, 152 Ridge Road, Hartsdale, N.Y. on Thursday 2-4 & 7-9 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Marion Woods on Friday March 25th at 10 AM.
