

Sr. Mary Veronica (Winnifred) Kiley, died Tuesday, Februay 4, 2014 at St. Cabrini Nursing Home in Dobbs Ferry, NY. She had been in St. Cabrini for four years. She was born Winnifred Kiley on December 9, 1924, to Patrick Kiley and Winnifred (Higgins) Kiley in the Panama Canal Zone, where her father was working as an engineer on the Panama Canal. She was the forth of five children. After graduating from High School, Junior College, and working for two years, she entered the Monastery of the Blessed Sacrament in Yonkers, NY, on August 15, 1946. She received the habit of the Order on April 7, 1947, where she then received the name of Sister Mary Veronica. She made her First Profession of Vows on April 14, 1948, and her Final Profession on April 14, 1951.
In 1962 she graduated from Mount St. Vincent College with a major in Spanish and a minor in English. She received a Master Degree in Spanish from Hunter College and received an award from the Spanish Institute at Columbia University for the best Spanish thesis in the tri-state area. Sister taught many years at the Monastery’s Blessed Sacrament Academy. She was both the Sub-Prioress and the Prioress at different times. From 1971-2001, she was Prioress at different times, and from 2004 until 2010, she was SubPrioress. She will always be remembered for her gentleness and kindness in leading the Sisters.
Sr. Mary Veronica is survived by her sister Kay Daher of Newton, New Hampshire. Kay and her husband Edmund have four children and seven grandchildren. Sister’s brother had one son, Patrick, who has two children. Sister was pre-deceased by her brothers Daniel and John, and her sister Patricia. Sister will be missed by her Sacramentine Community, but know she will be praying for all of us before God, whom she faithfully adored for 67 years. Visiting hours will be at the Whalen & Ball Funeral Home on Friday, February 7th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Mass will in held on Saturday February 8th in Sacred Heart Church in Yonkers, N.Y. at 9:30 a.m. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
