Stanley Golabek

August 2, 1924-December 26, 2017

Stanley passed away peacefully with his daughters at his side after living a full and joyful life of 93 years. He is remembered with love by his wife of 57 years, Helen, daughters Barbara Sullivan (John) and Susan Kochan (Scott), and grandchildren Amber and Brandon. Born in Yonkers, Stanley was the youngest of three children born to Michael and Nellie Golabek. He moved to New City in 1962 where he raised his two daughters, enjoyed home projects and tinkering with cars. In 2016 he and his wife relocated to an assisted living facility to be near his daughter in Keller, Texas where he charmed the staff with his puns and kindness. A veteran of the US Navy, Stanley proudly served as a signalman during WWII on the destroyer, USS Gleaves (DD-423). He was a Tin Can Sailor and attended his annual naval reunion for 50 years. A young entrepreneur, Stanley owned and operated a gin mill on Elm Street called Stan’s Elbow Room. He also ran a limousine service for celebratory events and vacationers in the Catskills. He worked as a heavy equipment mechanic for Poirier & McLane and then Yonkers Contracting, retiring after 40+ years as a member of Local 137. Quick with a joke, he made everyone smile and will be remembered for his sense of humor. He was an avid NY Giants fan and ticket holder for 40 years, a stained glass craftsman and long-time member of the Yonkers VFW and Slovak Clubs, where he enjoyed the camaraderie of his friends. Visiting hours will be at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home on Friday 4-8pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Casimir’s Church on Saturday December 30th at 10am. Entombment will follow at Ferncliff Cemetery.
