February 28, 1933July 10, 2019

Thomas J. Murtha passed away on July 10, 2019. He was born in the Bronx, NY to Thomas and Veronica (Neus).

He graduated from Mount Saint Michael Academy where he shined as both a football and track star. In his graduating “Mounties” yearbook (1951) he was called “The Houdini of the gridiron.” He was very proud and always told us that at one time he was the fastest man in New York and was recruited by the NY Giants. He graduated from Iona (B.A.) and Manhattan College (M.A.) respectively & throughout his long career he was a Spanish and Math teacher (All Hallows H.S. & Cardinal Spellman H.S.) and retired as a guidance counselor from Harrison High School. He is survived by Maryanne (Joseph) Zito, Veronica Murtha, Eileen Murtha (Edward Albert) and his grandchildren Thomas and Catherine Zito. He was predeceased by his first wife Catherine “Kitty” (Johnson) in 1970, his second wife, Barbara (Sheridan) in 2006 and his daughter, Barbara Ann Murtha in 1983. A special thanks to the Yonkers Office for the Aging, the Wound Clinic at St. John’s Hospital, Dr. Norman Rosen (& his office nurse and staff) and all those at the VA at Montrose. The kindness and compassion these professionals showed our dad, we cannot express in words our appreciation. You all were amazing people with our dad and we thank you “with all our hearts.” In lieu of flowers please consider donating to the Yonkers Office for the Aging Meal Program, 435 Riverdale Ave, Yonkers, NY 10701 in Tom’s memory. And if you have a few minutes after reading this please pray a decade of The Rosary - the Christ the King Prayer Group and The Rosary were of utmost importance to our dad most especially in the last few years of his life. A Memorial Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4-8pm. A Memorial Mass will be on Thursday at 10am in Christ the King Church, burial of ashes will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. I would love to speak to Tom about Track. Tom would light up and get so excited talking about all his accomplishments from the past. Tom was an amazing runner and gifted athlete. He held many records in the Bronx and in Van Cortlandt Park. You could tell he really enjoyed sports and running. Eileen inherited that same talent.
