He was a kind and gentle man who found joy in life’s simplest moments, always embracing each day with a tremendous positive outlook.
Tom was born on April 27, 1938, in Yonkers, New York, to the late Thomas F. and Josephine Flynn Terry. He attended Sacred Heart schools, graduating from Sacred Heart High School in 1956, and went on to Manhattan College, where he earned a degree in Civil Engineering in 1960 and captained the golf team. A lifelong learner, Tom later earned a master’s degree in Civil Engineering from NYU, an MBA from Iona College, and multiple professional engineering certifications. He also proudly served in the Army National Guard from 1960 to 1963.
Tom enjoyed a long and accomplished career in civil engineering, working for Con Edison, the Jim Waters Corporation, and the County of Westchester.
While attending Manhattan College, Tom met the love of his life, Barbara Waters. They were married in 1963 at St. Raymond’s Church in the Bronx and shared 61 years together, raising their three children in Yonkers.
A man of deep Catholic faith, Tom was devoted to Sacred Heart Parish, where he served for many years as a lector and Eucharistic Minister and taught CCD. He generously gave back to his community by coaching basketball and baseball for the North Yonkers Boys Club, mentoring students through Math Counts in inner-city schools, and serving in local hospitals through Eucharistic ministry.
An avid golfer, Tom loved sharing stories from the course, including caddying for Mickey Mantle at St. Andrew’s Golf Club in Westchester. His greatest joy was time spent with family, especially in Sag Harbor on Long Island, where he and Barbara created lasting memories.
Tom was predeceased by his beloved wife, Barbara; his daughter, Barbara Jean; and his sister, Joan McPhillips.
He is survived by his sons, Thomas (Jennifer) and Brian (Patricia); his seven grandchildren, Erin, Kelsey, Claire, Grace (Collin Walsh), Patrick (Alanna), Colleen, and Jack; his great-grandson, Seamus Walsh; and his niece and nephew, Susan and Thomas McPhillips as well as dozens of Waters family nieces, nephews, and brother and sister in laws.
Tom will be remembered for his kindness, quiet strength, and unwavering devotion to his faith and family.
