

Joan was born on December 10th, 1929 in Urbana, IL to Anton and Vasha Belle Karva. After moving to Eau Claire, WI she began working for Sacred Heart Hospital as a Nurse. Later she moved back to Urbana and then met Frank Serio, an Electronics Technician at the University of Illinois. They married in 1964. Joan became a homemaker and the couple welcomed a child into their home in 1965. She continued to pursue her education and graduated from Governors State University with a Bachelors degree in Nursing and then later from the University of Illinois with a Masters degree in Education. Her son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren remember her as a kind, gentle, and uplifting person who was always able to make them smile.
She was accomplished at both Nursing and Teaching. She had a big and generous soul and would always help anyone in the neighborhood that needed a healing hand. She was always an active and dedicated member of her community and church constantly volunteering. She loved baseball and was passionate about the St. Louis Cardinals and her adopted team the Los Angeles Angels.
She will be buried at Woodlawn Lincoln Cemetery in Urbana, IL.
