In September, 1953, LeRoy R. Leber graduated from Eckels College of Mortuary Science. In October, 1953, during the Korean War, LeRoy was drafted into the United States Army, having served his country honorably for two years. Upon LeRoy's discharge from the United states Army in October, 1955, he began his apprenticeship with Don Baumeister of the original Baumeister Funeral Home in York, PA.
In 1957, LeRoy passed all state board requirements and became a licensed funeral director. From 1957 through 1962, he was employed as the manager of the former Crane's Mens Store in downtown York and a supervisor at the former Cole Steel Manufacturing Company in York, PA. During this time-frame, LeRoy also assisted The Robert F. Koller Funeral Home and Baumeister Funeral Home with trade embalming and layout presentations.
In 1960, LeRoy and his wife Nancy Purchased a single story home in the west end of York, PA (Shiloh) as their personal residence. Between 1960 and 1962, with aspirations to become a full-time funeral director, LeRoy and Nancy made the necessary changes to their home and in 1962, The LeRoy R. Leber Funeral Home opened for business. The first funeral service was held for LeRoy's father, Russell C. Leber.
In 1989, son Leon Leber became the second generation of the Leber family to enter the family owned and operated business, having graduated from P.I.M.S., The Pittsburg Institute of Mortuary Science. Leon served his apprenticeship working with his father and in 1991 passed all state board requirements and became a licensed funeral director. In 1983, the funeral home was incorporated, LeRoy, Nancy and Leon serving as members of the corporation.
Upon the retirement of Nancy Leber in 1994, the second, second generation of the Leber Family, daughter Melinda Leber Kreiser joined the business as office administrator, corporation secretary/treasurer.
During the 1990's, multiple changes were made to the interior of the funeral home to meet funeral service needs in addition to adding physically challenged accessibility to the funeral home.
In 2013, the third generation of the Leber family, grandson Justin Everhart joined the family business and is currently serving as Office and Funeral Assistant.
For more than 50 years and after the passing of LeRoy and Nancy, their children continue to uphold their parents' vision. The family and staff of the LeRoy R. Leber Funeral Home, Inc. continues to offer traditional funeral, memorial, burial and cremation services with compassion and empathy at the forefront.
