On June 16, 2022, Martha J. Schonmeyer of Surprise, Arizona, left her earthly home to join her heavenly family and her Lord. Known by most as “Pat” and affectionally by her family as “Mimi,” she was one of the sweetest and kindest people who inhabited this world. Whether it was a card or note that she would write, a visit or a phone call, or a hand-knitted baby blanket, she would always try to spread a little joy into someone’s life. When dementia robbed her of the ability to do those things, she managed to continue bringing joy to all who loved her and cared for her with a never-ending smile that didn’t fade until her last few days.
Born November 22, 1927, in Mentor, Ohio, Pat was our last surviving family member of the “Greatest Generation.” She was born during the Depression, went to Mentor High School (beloved Class of ’45) during World War II, and was a wonderful mother to two Baby Boomers. She attended Hiram College and worked as a secretary before marriage and once again in the early 1970s to help her husband start his successful small business. She was a Room Mother, a member of the PTA, a Cub Scout mom, and a willing chauffeur to music, football, drama, and drill team practices. Her faith was strong, even when severely tested, and she served in many ways at the various churches where she worshipped during her adult life. She was always happiest when her family was all gathered under one roof.
Pat is survived by her daughter Beth (Tom) Moran of Surprise, AZ; Granddaughter Janet (Leslie) Pirkle of Deland, Florida; Grandson Jeff (Jennifer) Moran of Locust Grove, Georgia; her Great Grandchildren Bailey and Colton; as well as special niece Heidi Wintersteen. Pat was predeceased by her husband of 70 years, Dale; her son Dale; her brothers Ray, Bob, and Don, as well as her sister Arla.
While we are so sad to let her go, we are grateful that she is no longer bound by the earthly chains of dementia that took her away from us years ago. As she begins this new journey, we celebrate the life she had, the joy she brought, the love she spread, and the kindness of her heart.
