made his final journey to the arms of our Lord Wednesday, January 4, 2017.
Richard was born Richard David Melerski on July 14, to parents Arthur and Angeline Jarmakowski Melerski at their home in Buffalo, New York. He had two brothers, Arthur Jr. and Carl.
Angeline legally changed each of their names to the Americanized “Miller” in 1956.
Richard attended St. John Kanty Elementary School, Kensington High School (1958-1962) and completed his education with a B.S.E.E. (Bachelor of Electrical Engineering) in 1966 at Buffalo State University NY at Buffalo. After graduation, he made good use of his new skills when working at the nearby Sylvania TV factory in Batavia, New York.
While still a young man, Richard began a lifelong adventure traveling and exploring new and different places. His journey was vast and his experiences encompassed many states throughout our country.
From his explorations, Richard decided he enjoyed the deserts and hospitality of the southwest and came to Arizona to explore in 2001. He remained in our state for the remainder of his life and encountered several unique and helpful friends along the way. Richard chose to relocate to Colter Common Apartments and enjoyed his final home place.
Richard was a quiet, private person and kept mostly to himself and his desired activities. He loved the Foothills Library and spent hours researching and using computers at their facility. He avidly followed world events and had definite, informed views about politics and people around him. His ironic humor and keen insights made for lively discussions.
Richard remained actively engaged in his daily activities until an unfortunate, hit and run accident at Camelback Rd. and 31st Avenues caused him great bodily injury that rendered him unable to recover.
His friends would like to thank the staff at Foothills Library for their many kindnesses and respectful treatment of Richard. He felt at home because of all of you and your commitment to making the library a wonderful retreat for all people. Additionally, we would like to recognize the doctors, nurses and staff at Sunview Health & Rehabilitation for your knowledgeable and proactive care. You were amazing even when times were tough and your kindnesses were deeply appreciated. He also was very appreciative of Miss Lucy and the staff/residents of Colter Commons; his friend, Jack Chapman and the St. Vincent de Paul Vincentians and the many kind, nameless friends he met on the streets of Scottsdale and northwest Glendale. You all made a significant impression and positive impact on his life when his need was greatest.
All who are reading this are invited to a short, memorial celebration of Richard’s life to be held at
Colter Commons Senior Apartments-3003 W. Colter St, Phoenix, AZ 85017
