

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the untimely passing of former San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department Deputy Chief William (Bill) Cates. He left this world on July 20, 2023, only 74 years young. He is survived by his loving wife Karen and daughter Chelsea. He leaves behind a huge extended family and lifelong department companions who all feel the pain of his passing.
Bill joined the Sheriff's Department in 1981 and worked a wide assortment of stations and divisions while promoting through the ranks fro Deputy Sheriff to Deputy Cheif. The expereiences and relationships he forged during these years made him a true renaissance man. From the jails to patrol, the academy, employees resources, aviation, public affairs, to executive staff he showed his love for his career and his devotion to the department. Many of the skills experiences parlayed to his personal life such as his love of flying, and riding his Harley.
Bill and Karen loved to taravel and see the world. Whether thry were on moterhome trips with dear friends, or European cruises and tours, they had a zest for life and experiencing the wonders of the world and people in foreign lands. They were always so excited to plan new adventures togetherm as a family, and with friends. When they were not traveling, their home was ofter filled with the joyful noise of friendship, because Bill loved to BBQ for those he loved.
Bill will always be remembered by beatutiful words such as "amazing soul", "great friend", "true leader", "mentor", "confident", "kind and gentle", "fun loving", "gentelman". "extraordinary", "loving", and "caring". He touched so many people in so many ways and will be forever remembered.
Per Bill's wishes there will not be a formal service. A celebration of life for William will be held Saturday, September 2, 2023 at 3:00 PM at Redlands Elks Lodge, 663 New York St., Redlands, CA 92374.
