

Alphonso R. Varela, age 77, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away April 14, 2025. Alphonso was born November 11, 1947 in Yuma, Arizona to Frank and Manuela Varela. A graduate of Yuma High School, class of 1965 - a Criminal for life and where he met the love of his life, Margaret (Margie) Renteria.
He served in the U.S. Navy, where he received the National Defense Service medal and Vietnam Service medal with three bronze stars. Following the Navy, he began his 31-year career as a U.S. Postal carrier, delivering mail to over 70 percent of Yuma.
During his teen years, Al taught himself how to play the lead guitar. Realizing his passion for music, he began his lifelong hobby of playing music. He loved being on stage and performing every weekend for wedding receptions, New Year's Eve events, block parties and a myriad of social events. His music career began with The Torquays. He played with the Tommy Munoz band, Do It Fluid, Soul Survivor, Soul Be One, Blues Deluxe, Itonal, Frank Orduno and a Touch of Brass, Rock Band Reminiscence, Jeff Shy band and finally ended his music career with the Big Boss band.
Al was also a dedicated and loyal Raiders fan, attending all Sunday football games, immediately establishing a bond with the local Raiders football chapter after retirement from music.
Even though he retired from music, Al had a second hobby. He quickly established daily visits to his local favorite restaurants; Brownies, Bubba’s and his all-time favorite, El Charro where he would sit and visit with his buddies, his retired postal friends and other regulars. There wasn’t a stranger in the room. His big smile, kind and gentle personality drew people in. He was loved by all he met.
Al is survived by his daughter, Jocelyn Arviso (Johnny); his granddaughter, Jessica Martin (Brad); grandson, Jonathon Arviso; and two great-grandchildren, Harper and Alexander Martin. He is also survived by his brothers, Richard, Robert, Thomas Varela and sister Leticia Montana, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Al is preceded in death by his wife, Margaret L. Varela, parents, Frank and Manuela Varela, brothers Gilbert and Frank Varela, Joe Martinez and sister Yolanda Bennett.
To quote Kyle Dotson, "You were and will always be one of the greatest guitarist/musician and friend ever known.”
Services will be 10:00 am Thursday, April 24, 2025 at Johnson Mortuary. Rosary and scripture service at 10:30 am, with Naval honors to follow. Reception following ceremony at the Elk's lodge.
