06/06/1944 – 06/03/2026
It is with love and sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Bobby Ray Derrick, Sr. on June 3, 2026, just three days shy of his 82nd birthday. Born in Lubbock, Texas, our father was very mischievous as a young boy.
A proud veteran, he carried his service with quiet dignity and a deep sense of camaraderie. He joined the Navy in June 1961 and served on the USS Traverse County ship (LST-1160) during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He also served with the Army National Guard for many years. After the military, Bobby worked at Yuma Proving Grounds and retired from the Bureau of Reclamation.
Bobby is survived by his three children, Suzanne Figueroa, Cherry Derrick and Bobby Ray Derrick, Jr., his grandsons, Miguel Figueroa, Jr. (Marisa), Christopher Figueroa (Daniela) and Nathan Castro, his great-grandchildren Alina Figueroa, Aaliz Figueroa, Ailah Figueroa, Isaiah Figueroa, Ezekiel Figueroa and Luca Figueroa as well as his sister, Mary Rosenbaum.
Bobby was deeply proud of his children, grandsons and great-grandchildren. Nothing brought him more joy than sharing their stories and accomplishments, and he especially loved showing pictures of his great-grandchildren to the staff at the Yuma Veteran’s Home.
A graveside service will be held at 9 AM on Monday, June 15, 2026, at Desert Lawn Memorial Park where all who knew and loved Bobby are welcome to gather, share memories, and celebrate his life.
Bobby’s children would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the Yuma Veteran’s Home for the compassionate care they provided and for the many activities that kept him engaged and happy. Some of his favorite pastimes included trips to the casino, playing Bingo and especially Dominoes – a game at which he excelled so much that he was affectionately nicknamed “Bobby Bones”. They are deeply grateful to Dr. Dima for the exceptional care given to Bobby throughout the years and during his time in the hospital - your kindness, dedication, and presence brought great comfort to Bobby and his children. Special thanks also extended to Father Louis of Immaculate Conception Church for his many visits and prayers with Bobby and his children, as well as to Bob Hejkal, Elder and John Fager of First Christian Church for their visits and prayers. The family is equally thankful to the nurses and doctors in the ED, ICU and Tower 2 at Onvida Health for their skill, compassion, and support during Bobby’s final days.
Our father will remain in our hearts forever. He is free now - no more pain and suffering, no more limitations, just peace and beauty everywhere.
