

John C. Palumbo passed away peacefully at home on May 11, 2025, after a long and courageous fight with Lung Cancer. He was born February 8, 1959, in Phoenix, AZ, and grew up in Palo Verde, AZ. He attended AWC (Football Scholarship), University of Idaho, U of A (B.S. & Masters) and got his Doctorate degree in Entomology from Oklahoma State University.
John served the U of A and agricultural community as an entomology professor and extension specialist for 35 years from his base at the Yuma Agricultural Center. He was internationally recognized as one of the foremost experts in the integrated pest management field for vegetable crops, and his work made a profound impact in helping growers produce safer, healthier food using fewer pesticides and more sustainable practices. Some of his most notable achievements were when he received the Entomological Society of America’s highest honors for both Extension and Integrated Pest Management and was the first faculty member at the Yuma Agricultural Center to be honored with an endowed chair in integrated pest management.
He was a devoted and loving son, husband, father, and grandfather to his wife and family. He was proceeded in death by his father Joseph A. Palumbo. He is survived by this wife Kristine Turner Palumbo of 30 years, his mother Joan M. Palumbo, his children Casie Raymond (Husband Gary Raymond), Michael Palumbo (Wife Jill Palumbo), Rachel Sgroia (Husband Ryan Sgroia); brothers, Joseph E. Palumbo, James W. Palumbo, Jeffrey T. Palumbo; and grandchildren Tucker Raymond, Tanner Raymond, John R. Palumbo, and Anthony Sgroia.
When John wasn’t teaching or in the field he enjoyed hunting, camping, fishing, and golfing. He was avid reader, music lover, and was a self-taught guitarist. John was a tireless educator, brilliant scientist, and trusted friend. His generosity, quick wit, and kind spirit were known by all who met him. John’s smile and presence lit up every room he walked into, and he will be a dearly missed by members of multiple communities.
In lieu of a service, a celebration of John’s life will be held from 7pm-9pm, June 14, 2025, at the Yuma Agricultural Center: 6425 W 8th St, Yuma, AZ 85364. “When in Doubt, Scout”
