

Johnny Rico, a beloved member of the Yuma, Arizona community, passed away on July 17, 2024, at the age of 71. He was born on July 26, 1952, in Yuma, Arizona where he resided most of his life. He graduated from Yuma High School and Northern Arizona University.
Johnny had an esteemed career in education, leaving a lasting impact on countless students. He began as a high school social studies teacher and a dedicated baseball coach, nurturing young talents on and off the field. He was named Yuma All-Region Coach of the Year for1990-91. His passion for education and leadership led him to become the principal of Cibola High School, where he steered the institution towards excellence and received recognition with the Arizona A+ Secondary School Award.
His commitment to education extended beyond his time at Cibola High School, as he went on to serve as an assistant superintendent for the Yuma Union High School District. In this role, Johnny demonstrated his exceptional leadership skills, ensuring the success and progress of the district.
Johnny's expertise and dedication also led him to work as a consultant for Global Partnerships, where he shared his knowledge and experiences with educators nationwide. His contributions to the field earned him the title of Arizona Outstanding Administrator.
Beyond his professional achievements, Johnny was actively involved in various community organizations and initiatives. He selflessly served on the Y.M.C.A. Facility Task Force, Yuma Education Foundation, Fine Arts Association, Yuma Babe Ruth Board and was a valued member of the Yuma Rotary and Yuma Elks Lodge 476.
Throughout his life, Johnny Rico touched the lives of many, earning immense respect and admiration from those who knew him. His impact as a teacher, coach, principal, and community leader will forever be cherished by the Yuma community.
Johnny will be remembered for his unwavering dedication, compassionate nature, and infectious enthusiasm. He leaves behind a legacy of education, mentorship, and community service that will continue to inspire generations to come.
Johnny Rico is survived by his loving family, friends, colleagues, and the countless individuals whose lives he touched along his remarkable journey. His memory will forever be held dear in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind his wife of forty-two years Kriss, daughter, Kari Lofton (Ryan Arenas), and grandson, JT Lofton.
A Celebration of Life will be held October 11, 2024 at Yuma Elks Lodge, 1917 W 32nd Street Yuma, AZ.
