Michael E Herman
November 23, 1959 – November 19, 2020
Michael Eric Herman died November 19, 2020 at home in Yuma, Arizona.
He was born November 23, 1959 in Portland, Oregon to Glenn Herman and Mary (Works) Herman. Michael graduated from Canby Union High School in 1978. He enlisted in the United States Navy Marines Corps in 1980 and was honorably discharged in 2003. Michael was a decorated war veteran, having served in, among other missions, Desert Shield, Desert Storm and the Gulf War; earning a number of medals (including the gold star), ribbons, and letters of appreciation; he was both a rifle expert and a pistol sharpshooter.
After his discharge from the Marine Corps, Michael continued to serve his country, first as a Border Patrol Agent, and then worked for civilian contractors doing work on the Yuma, Arizona Proving Grounds and at the Yuma Marine Air Corps Base.
Michael had a large extended family and kept in touch with all of them. He enjoyed getting together with friends and family. He enjoyed several ocean voyages on his brother David’s boat, including from Cabo San Lucas to Seattle, Seattle to Puerto Vallarta, and San Carlos to Puerto Vallarta, as well as other excursions with brothers David and Larry. He also enjoyed lake fishing with his brother Tom, in the Flaming Gorge. Michael had a great many friends and coworkers who both respected and loved him. He always looked out for and helped his friends and coworkers whenever he could, including many veterans he served with, and friends he worked with.
Michael owned a 1997 Harley Davidson motorcycle that he loved and cherished. He put many, many miles on it over the years, including a ride from Yuma to the Sturgis, South Dakota rally.
Michael is survived by his beloved wife Monica; his siblings David Herman, Thomas Herman, Liane Hein, Larry Herman, Greg Herman and Kevin Herman; his stepmother Karen Herman, daughter Sarah Herman, step sons Mario and Javier Zavala, grandchildren Ana, Javier and Jennifer Zavala; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
