Robert was raised in Michigan and Yuma, AZ. Robert attended 4th Avenue Jr High School and Yuma High School before moving back to Michigan, where he went to Waterford High School. Robert joined the United States Navy on April 10th, 1956, as a Seabee. He met his loving wife Anita while stationed in Virginia. Robert was a Vietnam war veteran and he retired from the United States Navy on April 10th, 1975.
After retiring he moved his family to Mesa, Arizona where he attended Mesa Community College. He then began a second career with the Civil Service, Facilities Management Department, at the Marine Corps Air Station, Yuma, Arizona in February 1976. He received his Associates Degree at Arizona Western College. He received a Federal Length of Service Award from The United States Marine Corps for thirty years of faithful service to the Federal Government United States of America on the 25th of March 1987. Robert retired from the civil service in June 2000.
Robert was active with the American Legion Post 19, Yuma, Arizona. He was an Honorary Lifetime member of the American Legion for 48 Years and an Honorary Member of the 40/8 with the American Legion for 45 years. He was Legionnaire of the Year in 1981-1982. Yuma County Voiture 622 Voyageur of the Year in 1981-1982 and in 2003-2004. He was a Past Commander. Past Chef de Gare. He spent many years calling Bingo at The American Legion Post 19 and at Desert Manor Convalescent Home.
Robert helped with the American Legion Children's Christmas Train Program, bringing Santa to the local schools. He donated many years to volunteering at the American Legion, including working the Legion food booth during the Yuma County Fair. He was on the Ceremonial Team. If he could help you, he did. Robert was always kind, he enjoyed his family and working in his workshop.
When he retired, he and Anita bought a second home in the White Mountains of AZ, where they spent every summer they could, while still spending their winters in Yuma. They had the best of both worlds. He loved sitting on his porch with his wife and their dogs, while watching the hummingbirds.
Robert “Bob” is survived by his loving wife Anita of 61 years, their children, Barbara Whitney (Mike), Robert Hoffarth Jr, and Brenda Granger (Ken), his sister in-law Sandra Myers-Finley (Donald). Grandson’s Jesse (Andrea) Gurrola, Robert M. Gurrola (Kristie), Granddaughter’s Tiffany Gurrola, Stephaine Granger, Kaylie Di Pietro (Andrea), Megan Drawec (Andrew), and Madison Granger. Great Grandchildren, Hayley Chapman, Ashton Gurrola, Kelsey McIntire, Aolani Gurrola, Kendall Gurrola, Charlie Granger, Luca Di Pietro, and Gracey Davenport. He was the proud Papa to his 1st Great-Great Grandchild Anthony Reyes. Robert was also a loving Uncle to his 11 Nieces and his nephew David Myers. Along with many friends that are family.
Robert is preceded in death by parents Forrest and Harriett Hoffarth, his brother Jack Hoffarth (Mary), sister Eileen “Kay” Kleine, sister in-law Nancy Smith (Al), sister in-law Hazel Finley (Bill), brother in-law Donald Myers, Nephew’s Kenny Hoffarth and Jimmy Smith.
A Celebration of Life -Post Everlasting Ceremony, will be held on Tuesday November 8th, 2022, at 5:00pm. To attend the Post Everlasting Ceremony, you must arrive before 5:00pm.
