Vernie G. Kamrath, age 93, passed away Saturday, December 4, 2010 in Yuma, AZ. She was born February 17, 1917 in Alturas, CA.
Vernie married Harley K Steward in Washoe County, Nevada in March 1934. They moved to Sacramento, CA and lived there till 1941. They moved to Port Orchard, Washington. In 1947 they moved to West Seattle. Vernie worked as an Industrial Bookkeeper from 1953 till 1970 in Seattle, Washington. Vernie was also an active supporter and Sunday school teacher for the West Seattle Christian Church from 1952 till 1963 for both children and adults. At this time she also became a Cub Scout Den Leader for the Cub Scout Pack the church sponsored. When her son's joined the Church sponsored Boy Scout Troop she became one of the designated drivers to get the boys to and from their outings. She was always one ready to volunteer. After Harley retired in 1972 they moved to Naches, Washington. They continued with their love of the outdoors (hunting, fishing) and RV travel. Harley passed away in October 1982.
This need not stop Vernie from traveling. She joined the Traks to New Zealand and traveled in New Zealand and Australia in a little RV. After she returned from this travel episode she than purchased her own little putt putt (Small Class C). She then proceeded to make a Traks to Alaska RV adventure with the group but drover her putt putt without a co-pilot. She would spend the summers in Naches and travel to California and Arizona in the winter. During one of her stays in the Yuma, AZ area she met Sig Carlson. Little did she know they would be married in May, 1987. Sig and Vernie continued with summers in Yakima, WA and winters in the warmer parts of the U.S. in their RV. Sig and Vernie visited Washington D.C., traveled down the Mississippi River on a barge to New Orleans along with visiting Branson, Missouri. This was just a few of their adventures. Sig passed away on April 29, 2001.
At this time Vernie decided Washington was too cold for her and she permanently made her home in Yuma, AZ. She did get to travel to Hawaii in June 2003 with her son Donald and his wife Barbara and grandson David. She also renewed her volunteering with Christian Church of Yuma. While she was living in Cactus Garden RV Park she organized the park Dart Club. She could shot darts with the best of them. They were sorry to see her taken away by Eston. In 2004, Eston Kamrath started courting her and they were married April 30, 2005. She always said she would not re-marry. One of her wedding gifts was bottles of ketchup so she could eat her words. In December 2005 she had heart surgery in Tucson at the UMC Hospital. After her surgery she complained that the valve they used was from a Lazy Pig. So now she had a reason to start slowing down. That didn't stop Eston and her spending the summers in Show Low, AZ until September 2008 when they moved into the Desert Rose retirement community. Eston was infamous in the Show Low park where they stayed. They all called upon Eston to trap and remove the Skunk population within the park. Of course Vernie would sniff the air when he returned to make sure the Skunk didn't perfume him. In July 2007 Vernie and Eston traveled to Seattle to attend her grandson Sean's wedding reception. Vernie has numerous friends in the Yuma area.
