Harry A. Stewart of Bardonia, NY, 77 years old, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2021. Harry was born on May 14, 1943, in Johnson City, NY to Gladys A. (nee Swingle) Stewart and Harry E. Stewart. He is predeceased by them, and his half-sister Geraldine (nee Leach) Williams.
At age six, Harry relocated to Grand View-On-Hudson, and then Nyack, NY. He graduated from Nyack High School in 1961.
Thereafter, Harry served in the Marine Corps from 1961-1966, with the 2nd Marine Division, Marine Detachment USS Randolph (CVS-15). He earned the rank of Sergeant.
On April 1st 1966, Harry accepted an appointment with Rockland County Sheriff’s Office, and was one of the original ten officers in the Department. He later rose to ranks of Chief of Patrol. Under his leadership the Police Division earned accreditation, and became a thriving and integral part of public safety in this county. He was also a founding member of the Rockland County Law Enforcement Memorial Committee, and played a major role in organizing an annual ceremony to honor fallen Law Enforcement officers. The monument in front of the County Courthouse will always remain a silent, if somber, tribute to his untiring efforts. His art work adorns the top of the memorial.
He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Ann (nee Emanuelo) Stewart married May 4, 1996 of Bardonia, NY; his daughter Heather G. (nee Stewart) Bennett and son-in-law William J. Bennett; his grandsons Tyler and Cole Bennett, of Stony Point, NY, and his niece Christine and her husband Herb Flint of Binghamton NY.
He is also survived by his step children: Annmarie (nee Emanuelo) and Robert Uhl; Michael and Denise (nee Pflaumbaum) Emanuelo; and Jeanine (nee Emanuelo) and Russell Blackwell. His step grandchildren: Ryan, Matthew, Ashley and Andrew Uhl; Michael, Madison, Nicholas, and Michelle Emanuelo, Lewis Blackwell, Brittany, Jenna, and Brendan Lazaroff and one great- grandchild Max Michael Emanuelo.
Harry’s greatest joys were his family, the Marine Corps, Art, drawing, creating scale models and miniatures, and photography. He will be forever in our hearts.
Family will receive friends on Sunday January 24, from 3-7 pm at Higgins Funeral Home in Congers, NY. A private family burial will be on Monday, January 25 at Mt Repose Cemetery, Haverstraw, NY.
