Barbara Ann Shane was born on January 26th, 1966 at Lansing General Hospital in Lansing, MI. She was the daughter of James W. Keifer (Felipe Lerma – Biologically) and Rose-Mary Johnson. She attended Lansing Eastern High School where she graduated in 1984. She later went on to Graduate from the University of Tennessee with her Bachelors in Business Management – minoring in Human Services.
Community Development and Outreach was Barbara’s life calling. She always displayed a passion for helping others beginning with her brief tenure in nursing school, landing her promptly in what would be her life’s work – Human Advocacy. Barbara worked in various segments of Community support starting with The American Cancer Society – later leading her into work with the Muscular Dystrophy Association and Volunteers of America. Her more seasoned work was with Christian Services non-profit organization via the United Way for 6 years. She was also was named Outreach Director for Potter’s Park United Methodist Church for 4 years where she furthered her ecclesiastic credentials becoming a Lay Leader for the Michigan Conference of the United Methodist Church, one of her proudest accomplishments. She also devoted her time doing volunteer work for organizations such as Cristo Rey and the Salvation Army. Her Community work continued after she married the love of her life, Johnath Shane in 2006, in Drysden, TN where she remained active as an organizer/leader in various churches and community programs.
Nothing was more important to Barbara than her family. As a Mother of 9, she was often revered as the neighborhood mom to everyone she knew. She leaves to cherish her memory husband of 14 years Johnath Shane (of Greenfield, TN). She also leaves her loving children (2 daughters and 7 sons): Patricia Manning, James Manning, Philip Burtley Jr. (all of Lansing, MI), Jessica Mays and Emmanuel Manning (of Orlando, FL), Robert Manning IV (of Atlanta GA), Andrew Shane (of Jacksonville, FL), JD Shane and Dontia Shane (of Greenfield, TN). She also leaves her loving siblings, TSgt Micheal Keifer, USAF (Ret.) (of Holt, MI), Mark Keifer and Brenda Keifer (of Lansing, MI). She leaves behind several aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and a strong – proud legacy of 29 grandchildren (with 3 on the way).
She is proceeded in death by parents James W. Keifer and Rose Mary Keifer, Grandparents Noah and Corrine Johnson, Alva and Mary Keifer and Henry and Olivia Lerma. She will be missed greatly and thought about often.
