Alice Joy Johnson

We are selfishly devastated at the loss of Alice Joy, but rejoice in her homecoming with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Joy, as she was known, epitomized her name bringing spunk and happiness to all who were blessed to know her.

Joy was born December 20, 1927 in Brownfield, Texas, the daughter of Henry & Lillie Chisholm. She grew up in Brownfield surrounded by love and laughter with three sisters and a brother as playmates.

After a year at ACU, she moved to “the big city” of Lubbock in 1953 where she became secretary for Norvel Young at Broadway Church of Christ and worked for four years. As luck would have it, her roommate’s brother came to visit and they caught each other’s eyes. After a short courtship they were married in her parent’s home in Brownfield on October 28,1954. They were blessed with four children Sandy, Steve, Jan, and Linda. Joy ran her home with skill for many years. Then in 1971, she began working as a secretary at Vandelia Church of Christ where her family made their home.

She enjoyed a lifelong passion for quilting, crocheting, cross stitching and devouring crossword puzzles. Books were dear friends and completing puzzles while viewing her garden was a favorite pastime. She was quick to avoid cooking if going out was an option, but could always be depended on for numerous desserts. It was not unusual to be greeted at the door with something sweet to nibble on. Her home was her happy place, but she loved travelling, visiting family and seeing the country.

She was known to many as “Sweet Joy”, but we also remember the twinkle in her eye as she would try to get away with a made-up word in Scrabble. She was never above being silly with her many grandchildren; whether it was howling at the moon or spraying whip cream in her mouth, all to the shock and amusement of everyone watching. She had a servant heart and took great joy in serving her church and community.

She adored her husband of over 65 years and would light up every time he brought her flowers, held her hand, or would call her “his girl”. To sum it up, she was an incredible woman and it’s no wonder there are a plethora of grandchildren bearing Joy as a middle name.

She is survived by her husband Glenn; her son Steve (and Brenda) Johnson; her daughters Sandy (and Fritz) Scharrer, Jan Johnson, and Linda (and Chris) Anderson; seven grandchildren Tommy (and Vanessa) Johnson, Lauren (and Matthew) Skelton, Cheyenne Johnson, Sierra Anderson, Makaylee Anderson, Lillie Anderson; and three great grandchildren Abigail Blanco, Malcolm Johnson, and Owen Skelton. Also surviving are two sisters, Mary Smith, and Martha Taylor, as well as one brother George Chisholm. Including many others who were blessed to be loved by her.

She was greeted in heaven by her parents, Henry & Lillie, her sister, Ruth Wilks and her granddaughter, Kristene Blanco. Well done good and faithful servant.

We will Celebrate her life on February 25, 2021 at 10:00am in the Resthaven Abbey Chapel, 5740 W 19th Street, Lubbock TX 79407. If you would like to visit with the family, visitation will be on February 24, 2021 from 5:00 -7:00 in the Resthaven Chapel.
