GREENFIELD, ME and WINCHENDON, MA--Milton “Mickey” Durwood Whiting, 77, peacefully passed away on February 4, 2021 surrounded by loved ones, after a difficult battle with Cancer. Mickey was born on October 15, 1943 in Milford a son of Harry Irving and Ida Louise (Treadwell) Whiting.
Mickey graduated from Old Town High School, class of 1962. He married Marion Madden in 1963 and joined the Army the same year. Mickey was stationed in Orleans, France til 1965 and left service March of 1966. He worked in Sheetmetal for over 40 years. He started teaching sheet metal at United Technology Center where he created the Tetrahedron statue that continues to stand front of the UTC. Mickey was passionate about both teaching and was the owner of Greenfield Sheet Metal and loved what he did for a living.
Mickey retired from teaching at UTC in 2003 after 18 years. While retired, Mickey had time to pursue his love of making bean hole beans, Cushman scooters, camping, traveling, Country and Blue Grass Music, Dancing, Bingo Caller, card games, class of 1962 reunions and spending time with family.
Mickey was predeceased by his first wife Marion Whiting, sister Janice Poage. He is survived by his wife Mary Spencer Whiting, and son Shane Durwood Whiting and wife Theresa and grandsons- Nathan and Adam and granddaughter Mikayla. His daughter Shar-Lynn Mae Gillissen and husband Chris and grandsons Aidan and Brycen. Sister Marie Willette, Brother Harry Whiting and his wife Joyce, Sister Neola Preble and her Husband Carl. He was known as Dad and Papa to many including Shannon Lancaster- Commeau and Mary’s other extended family.
Visiting hours will be 4pm to 7pm Friday February 12, 2021 at Birmingham Funeral Home 438 Main St Old Town. Covid protocols will be in place which includes limited number of people in the building at one time, face coverings, and social distancing. A private service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday February 13, 2021 at 2PM. Those wishing to attend virtually may watch the Live stream that can be found at the Birmingham Funeral Home FaceBook page. Spring services will be announced at the Crocker Turn Cemetery, Greenfield.
