Hildegard died peacefully of congestive heart failure at a care home in Coquitlam to where she had recently moved. She was 94 years of age. She was predeceased by husband, Arnold, and brothers Helmut and Robert. She is survived by children Eugene (Barbara), Sheila (Richard), and Stanley, and by granddaughters Kristen (Conor), Kathryn (Michael), Katelin, and Heather (Kurtis).
She was born and raised on a farm close to Neudorf, Saskatchewan. Her first language was German. Her favourite memories of Saskatchewan were attending public school, German school, and Sunday school as well as observing the Milky Way and the Aurora Borealis. To her lifelong regret, she had to leave public school after grade 8 because her mother was ill and she was needed at home. She and Arnold married in 1948, and they moved to Vancouver where they joined Redeemer Lutheran Church. Hildegard worked in the kitchen of Dogwood Lodge Care Home as a dietary aid from 1976 to 1991 when she retired. She and Arnold took up lawn bowling and hiking, and they drove across Canada and visited Germany and Australia. In later years they participated in the Adult Day Program at Cedar Cottage Neighbourhood House. In memory of Hildegard, please consider a donation to Redeemer or Cedar Cottage.
